There are many banks to choose from in Spain.  Personal recommendation and English speaking staff are a bonus, particularly if you only have a basic level of Spanish.

Local banks tend to offer a personal service and it’s very easy to get an appointment with your bank manager (you won’t be fobbed off with account managers trying to sell you insurance you don’t need).  Bank managers usually speak English some also German and will advise you on all aspects of your financial affairs.

Banks are competitive and you may be able to negotiate on rates to get a better deal for your money. Don’t be afraid of asking!

Most regular household bills are paid by direct debit.  Make sure you check your bills and statements as banks are renowned for deducting amounts from your account that you’re not expecting. Usually prior to you being notified what the costs are.

Banks have summer and winter opening times. Summer they open always at 8.15am or 8.30am, except Halifax (as far as we know), and they close at 2.00pm or 2.30pm. In summer banks are closed on Saturdays from the beginning of April till the end of September.

Winter time means that, on top of that, Banks are open on Saturdays, closing normally at 1.00pm. Saving Banks (Cajas de Ahorro) normally open on Thursday afternoon, until 7.00pm or so (Solbank, for example, works from 8.15am till 4.30 pm, from Monday to Thursday, till 2.00pm on Friday, and it’s closed on Saturday, from October till end April.
