What Type of Property are You Looking for?

When thinking about what type of property to buy you should seriously think about how much work and money you’re prepared to invest in your Spanish dream.  Spanish homes are built differently than other European homes, particularly the older properties.  Whether you’re looking for a restoration project or a new-build we’re sure you’ll find something to suit you on our website.

Flat (piso) – many Spanish families live in flats and they are deceptively large.  They can have three or four bedrooms and a roof terrace with fantastic views.  Flats are also a cheaper option than a house.

Villa – villas tend to be newer and purpose built for foreigners.  Not many Spanish people live in villas.  They can be located on an urbanisation or set alone in the countryside.  Villas are often designed for summer living and as holiday homes.  If you intend to live in yours all year round remember it can get very cold in Spain in the winter and heating is essential, particularly if you live inland.

Finca – an older-style typical Spanish country property.  Some fincas are beautifully restored works of art; others are just heaps of stone.  Restoring a finca is not for the faint-hearted!  If you take on a restoration project be sure you have the money and knowledge to carry it through.

House (casa)  – there are plenty of Spanish houses to buy in the local area, both in the campo and on the outskirts of the towns.  If you buy a house and intend to make any changes to it be sure that you will get planning permission before you sign anything.  This will need to be obtained from the town hall (ayuntamiento).

Town House (casa de pueblo) – if you’re looking for something traditionally Spanish then a town house is for you.  Don’t be fooled by the small frontage.  These houses can be enormous inside and are often spread over several floors and have a roof terrace.  Many also have a small garden terrace on the ground floor.  One disadvantage of a town house is that they can be very dark as there are usually only small windows.  However, if you buy a town house you’ll certainly become part of the local culture.
