What to do if you are involved in an accident

A road accident can be very frightening and shocking, but if you are not injured you must try to remain calm and follow the correct procedure.

You must stop if you are involved in an accident, no matter how minor.  If there are no injuries you don’t need to call the police.

  • We advise you to print this page and keep it with your car documents so you know what to do.

  • Call 112 (the emergency number in Spain) if there are any injuries or fatalities

  • Do not move an injured person, but cover them to keep them warm and prevent shock.

  • If you are one the motorway and don’t have a mobile use one of the emergency telephones located on the hard shoulder.

  • If you’ve called the police don’t move the vehicle(s) until they arrive.

  • Put on the reflective jacket that is kept in your vehicle.

  • Keep any other passengers that aren’t injured at a safe distance from the vehicle.

  • If possible put on the vehicle’s hazard lights and place the red warning triangles you should keep in your car in front and behind it.

  • If you have a camera (or one on your mobile telephone) take photographs.

  • Exchange details with the other drivers involved:  name, address, telephone number and insurance company.

  • Ask any witnesses for their details.

  • Ensure you take the registration numbers of all the vehicles involved.

If you are detained by the police for questioning do not sign any documents unless you are sure and agree with what they say.

Do not sign any piece of paper any other party gives you, for example an accident report form from their insurance company.

You must inform your insurance company of the accident as soon as possible.
