Utility bills in Spain are usually cheaper than in the UK but with increasing fuel prices the cost of gas, oil and electricity is rising.

Your bills may be considerably cheaper than in the UK, or you may find they are on a par.  What you save in heating bills because you don’t need it for such a large part of the year you may make up for in your electricity and water bills to maintain your swimming pool and garden during the summer.

You can’t shop around like you can in the UK for cheaper suppliers – it may be possible to change from one gas supplier to another or change mobile phone providers, but the choice is very limiting.

One interesting point that not many people know is that utility bills are often cheaper if you live in the hub of a town or village as opposed to the outskirts.  We’re not entirely sure of the reason behind this – it’s one of those Spanish mysteries, but it’s worth asking about when you’re looking for somewhere to live.

If you want an internet connection you’ll be reliant on Telefónica or one of the local providers that supplier an internet connection to people who live in remote areas where they can’t get a telephone.  These connections are fairly good, but sometimes the speed is a little slow and it’s often impossible to download music and video clips.

Spanish television is very limiting and really only good for improving your Spanish.  If you want all the channels you’re used to at home you’ll have to pay for it.  This can cost anywhere between 800 and 1500 euros, depending on the supplier.  Don’t forget you’ll have to wait an hour for all your favourite programmes!

The postal service in Spain takes a little getting used to, but once you made friend with your local postmaster you shouldn’t have any problems.  Mail usually takes about 4 days to travel between Spain and the UK and the system is fairly reliable.  What you can’t count on is sending (and collecting if you have a PO Box at the post office) your mail when it suits you; rural post offices only open for a couple of hours a day.
