Travel & Transport

Public transport in the Costa Blanca region is fairly reliable, although to reach some of the remoter areas you will need your own vehicle or to hire a car.
We recommend you call the numbers given before making a journey, as timetables and routes are subject to change.
If you’re hiring a car it’s always worth trying to negotiate on the price, particularly out of the tourist season, as there are deals to be had if you ask. If you’re a frequent traveller (maybe you live here but take business trips to other parts or Europe, or you like to travel back to your home country regularly) many of the local companies will also rent you a car that you can use to travel to and from the airport at a very good price. The local car hire companies are cheaper than the big names you see at the airport.
One thing you will notice in this region is that there’s considerably less traffic. Yes, there are still traffic jams in Alicante, Valencia and the other big cities, but rush hour just doesn’t exist in the smaller villages and towns. You’re more likely to be held up be a tractor hauling grapes to the bodega or two Spaniards stopping their cars and having a chat in the street.
This street chatting happens a lot in the small towns so beware if you decide to take a short cut through the narrow streets – you could regret it! If you’re not held up by the conversationalists you might find yourself stuck in a one-way street with no way of turning your car round and the streets in Spanish towns weren’t built for cars!
Of course a great way to explore the region at a leisurely pace is by bicycle. Just make the time, hire a bike, plan with a map, take some refreshments and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
