The Traffic Police

In towns traffic is policed by the local police (policía local), who wear black or navy blue uniforms.  They direct traffic, deal with congestion problems (i.e. when large vehicles drivers decide to attempt the impossible and navigate the narrow streets) keep traffic moving safely and generally blow whistles a lot!

The highways and motorways are policed by the civil guard (guardia civil de tráfico), who wear green uniforms.

If any policeman waves you down you must stop and get out of your car.  At night they may wave coloured beacons at you to get you to stop.  This is one time when being able to speak Spanish will help you as it’s highly unlikely the police will speak English.  Always be polite and if you genuinely didn’t know you were causing an offence say so.

The traffic police are able to impose on the spot fines or can fine you through the post, when you will receive a boletín de denuncia.  This can be paid at the post office, at the town hall or the traffic department – don’t forget to get a receipt.  If you don’t agree with a fine you can appeal against it.

Points can be put on your driving licence for traffic offences just as in the UK.  You can be also be disqualified from driving and have your licence taken away and for very serious traffic offences be put in prison.

Tip:  if another driver flashes their lights at you they are likely to be warning you that there is a police road check ahead.
