The Spanish Civil War
The Spanish civil war that took place between July 17 1936 and April 1 1939 was a bloody massacre that took the lives of 500,000 people.
There was unrest in Spain for many years before the war, as the Spanish people were not happy with the government. It was run incompetently and the run up to the civil war resulted in strikes, riots and public disturbances.
The uprising began when General Francisco Franco took military control of the Spanish army in Morocco. Many believed the country would be better run by the army. This military control quickly spread throughout Spain as the war took hold.
The main fight was between the Republicans (los republicanos) and the First Rebellion (los nacionales).
After three years the war finally ended in 1939 with the victory of the First Rebellion and the resulting dictatorship of Franco. Madrid was the last city to be taken and many Republicans then fled over the border to France.
