Spanish Royal Family
The chief of state in Spain is the King of Spain, King Juan Carlos. Born in Italy, he has been king since 1975, when the dictator Franco died. The king is well liked and has a good reputation amongst the Spanish population.
King Juan Carlos moved to Spain with his younger brother to undertake their education. Sadly his brother, known as Infante Alfonso of Spain was accidently killed in a shooting accident in Portugal when he was 15.
The king met his Greek wife Queen Sofía on a cruise of the Greek islands. They married in 1962 and have three children: Elena, Cristina and Felipe. Queen Sofía is also known as Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark.
Prince Felipe (official title Prince of Asturias), born in 1968, is heir to the throne. In traditional Spanish style he has an impressive name: Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y de Grecia also known as Felipe de Borbón for short.
Until his marriage in 2004 the prince was considered to be an eligible bachelor. He is well known for two particular relationships before he got married and was often the subject of many a press story. One was with Isabel Sartorius, of Spanish nobility. Their relationship was frowned upon by the royal family as she was divorced and older than Felipe. The other was with Eva Sannum, a Norwegian model famous for modelling underwear – this didn’t go down well with the general Spanish public or the royal family.
Despite this Prince Felipe ended up marrying a divorcee: Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, a former CNN journalist. The couple now have two daughters.
