Spanish History

Spain is a country that has a diverse and interesting history dating as far back as 50,000BC, when the first evidence of cave dwellers was found in the caves at Benidoleig. It has seen wars, rebellions, dictatorship, industrial growth and acceptance by Europe and the rest of the world as a developing country, and over the last 50 years an influx of tourism that has boosted the economy.
Tribes settled in this area, making a living from farming, until the invasion of the Romans in the 1st century. The Romans brought culture and economic development to the country, but were invaded by the Visigoths in the 3rd century.
This in turn opened the door to a Muslim takeover in 711-14, in which all but the northwest of the Iberian peninsula was conquered. This again allowed Spain to flourish as Arab laws entitled Christians to religious freedom, employment at court, public office, and military service.
It was in the 15th century that Christopher Columbus discovered America, which is why so many South American countries today still have links with Spain. Columbus believed he could sail west from Spain and Portugal to Asia
, which is where South America got in the way.
In 1478 the Spanish Inquisition was established. It was believed by the government that there should be a pure Spanish-Christian race and no Christian should marry a Jew, which would destroy the purity. Because of this many Jews were unlawfully killed or forced to leave the country. The Inquisition was ended in the 19th century.
