In Spain baptism is as important as a wedding. This is the time when children are officially named and accepted as part of the church. After the formal ceremony there’ll always be a party.
Spanish people always have two surnames: traditionally their father’s surname comes first, then their mother’s. It is permitted to put the mother’s surname first, but this is not common.
When a couple get married the woman doesn’t change her name, so the concept of the maiden name doesn’t exist and both partners will have different surnames. Their children will then follow the pattern of taking both their parents’ surnames. It is a condition that all children from the same parents have their surnames in the same order.
