Spain after Franco
The dictator General Francisco Franco ruled for 40 years (1939-1975). When he died in 1975 at the age of 82, Spain began its transition to democracy.
Franco had appointed Prince Juan Carlos as his successor (proclaimed King Juan Carlos in 1975), which recreated a monarchy and the end to the reign of the dictator.
During the civil war and Franco’s ruling Spain had been isolated from the rest of the world, and it was now Juan Carlos’ job to establish international relations, boost the economy and gain the confidence of the Spanish nation.
Although King Juan Carlos had been selected and groomed by Franco he sought to bring about changes that Franco would almost definitely not have approved of.
He and Queen Sofia gained respect both at home, as they visited the various troubled regions of Spain, and abroad building political respect for a country that had been virtually isolated from the rest of the world for many years.
