Shopping in Spain

Shopping in Spain can be cheaper than in the UK or Germany if you know where to go. This section of our website tells you where you can get the best bargains, how to save money and where to buy certain items.
If you insist on buying on only buying British food items or only going to the most expensive supermarkets then your cost of living in Spain will be high. It might take a while to get to know the Spanish brands that you like (and where they’re located in the supermarket), but this is all part of the challenge of living in a new country.
As with most situations in Spain, remaining calm and understanding that the concept of queuing isn’t that familiar to a Spanish person will help keep your blood pressure down. One excellent thing about Spanish supermarkets is they often open more tills as soon as one or two customers are seen at the checkout, so you don’t have to wait too long. The nice man or lady operating the till will also help you pack your bags for you.
The tradition of buying locally is still upheld by the Spanish, and for many foreigners here it’s part of the charm of living in this region. Taking the time to purchase from individual shops isn’t just about what to buy for dinner, it’s a whole social occasion by the time you’ve had a chat with the shop keeper, bumped into a few friends and made some new ones! We fully support purchasing locally as it help keeps our towns and villages alive.
