If you wish to sell your car or any other vehicle in Spain you can either advertise it privately in newspapers and shop windows or sell it to a garage, possibly in part exchange for another vehicle.

You can also put a ‘for sale’ (se vende) sign in the car with your telephone number. This signs can be bought at hardware stores (ferreterías) or in the Chinese bazaar that you will find in every town in the local area.

When selling a car you must:

Take the registration document (permiso de circulación) to the local traffic department (the nearest is the Jefatura de Tráfico in Alicante) to ensure the vehicle is transferred to the new owner. If this isn’t done the seller could be liable for any accident or traffic offence the buyer has in the vehicle.

Don’t give the new owner the registration document.

A transfer of ownership form (transferencia - available from the traffic department) should be completed. The buyer keeps a copy and another copy is given to the traffic department.

Supply the purchaser with a valid MOT (ITV) certificate.
Show evidence that the car tax has been paid.
Tell your insurance company.

Payment for a large amount of money is usually done with a banker’s draft (cheque bancario). Do not accept a personal cheque for large amounts of money. If you are unsure what type of cheque the buyer is giving you ask them to accompany you to your bank or arrange the cheque handover to take place there. If a buyer is offering cash it is again advisable to carry out the handover at your bank so they can count and authenticate the cash. Call them for an appointment to do this.

You should give the buyer a receipt stating the current kilometre reading and that you are selling the vehicle as seen and there is no guarantee.

You can also employ the services of a gestor to help you with the sale of your vehicle, which may be a good idea, particularly if you don’t want to deal with the bureaucracy of the traffic department in Alicante.
