Sea Creatures
The sea in this area is relatively safe, although there are a few creatures that may give you a nasty bite or sting if you disturb them.
Most common are jellyfish, which swarm in the sea during the summer months. Sometimes beaches are closed if there is a jellyfish swarm. There tend to be more jellyfish in the sea when a hot summer follows a mild winter.
Another unpleasant sea creature is the weever fish. These burrow themselves in the sand and wait for their prey. If you stand on one it will most likely sting you. Another one to watch out for is the scorpion fish, which can give an unpleasant sting. Also common are rays, which again hide in the sand so you can’t see them.
One thing you don’t have to worry about too much on the Costa Blanca is sharks. You’re just as likely to be attacked by a shark in England as in Spain as attacks are extremely uncommon.
During the summer months many popular beaches have lifeguards and/or a first aid station. If you’ve been bitten or stung tell the lifeguard as they should be a qualified first aider and will likely have the right medication. If you are at all worried about a bite or sting from a sea creature see a doctor.
