Road Tax - impuesto municipal sobre vehículos de tracción mecánica/IVTM

Road tax is payable annually to the local tax office (SUMA).  For more information on SUMA click on this link www.suma.es  Beware of the Spanish paperwork system and don’t automatically assume you will get a reminder to pay your vehicle tax.

The tax is paid at the same time every year, between March and May.  During this time you will notice posters in shops and advertisements in newspapers reminding people that it’s tax payment time.

If you choose to pay your tax at the tax office you are likely only to be able to pay by credit card.  Otherwise you will need to go to a local bank (check which one the tax office uses) with your vehicle tax form and pay there.  If you’ve been sent a reminder you only need take this and the amount to pay will be on it.  If you haven’t you will need to take your car documents to your local SUMA office to get the form.    You and your car will be registered on their files as this happens automatically when the car is put into your name.  Road tax can also be paid by direct debit.

There is no tax disc to display inside the windscreen, but you should keep the receipt to show you’ve paid in the car.
