Pre-school & Primary
Pre-school
This is a cross between nursery and pre-school. Children are taught basic skills such as understanding of the world, self awareness and good behaviour in preparation for their primary school years. A variety of methods are used including play, arts and crafts, music, games, listening to stories.
Children are taught in a semi-formal environment, which gets them used to what it will be like in a primary classroom, but the focus is also on fun and remembering how young the children are. Many children will move on to primary school with friends they have made at pre-school, giving them a sense of security and familiarity.
Primary Education
Primary education (or educación general básica) is compulsory and split into three cycles. The curriculum covers the following:
- language (Spanish and local language, depending on where you live)
- maths
- social science
- music
- physical education
- art
- religion (you will be asked if you want your child to study religion – if you would prefer them not to they will do an alternative activity during religious classes)
Children are constantly monitored and assessed and you will be given a report at the end of each term. Spanish primary schools don’t tend to hold parents’ evenings, but there is usually a dedicated time each week when you can discuss any concerns you may have with your child’s teacher.
If a child doesn’t meet the set standards during a particular cycle they may have to repeat the year.
