Pharmacies (farmacias)
Pharmacies in Spain are very good and offer a much broader range of medicines over the counter than in the UK. They are also often cheaper.
A pharmacy can be distinguished by its green cross on a white background sign.
Note - you cannot buy medicines in the supermarket in Spain.
In Spain pharmacists are well trained and often you can avoid a visit to your GP by explaining your problem to the pharmacist, who will advise you on relevant treatment. You will need to speak Spanish in the more rural areas as often the pharmacists don’t speak English. This is important if you are being given instructions on how often to take medicines or asked if you’ve any allergies. It’s a good idea to take a phrase book with you to the pharmacy.
