Obtaining an internet connection
Telefónica offer an ADSL service and there are often special offers advertised on their website www.telefonicaonline.com However, don’t expect to get access to the internet quickly. You may be one of the lucky ones and get it within a couple of weeks of ordering, or you may be in for a wait.
The important thing is to place your order in plenty of time and keep chasing it.
There are other service providers that advertise in the local press and on the internet; make sure you do your research in terms of things like connection speed, downloading cost and contracts.
There are some companies that offer an internet service that doesn’t need a telephone line. It’s not cheap but well worth it if you need reliable internet access and are not happy with your current provider.
Broadband Speed
Your broadband speed {also known as ADSL} is based on an initial test on your telephone number. The actual speed you will achieve is dependent on a number of factors:
- The length and quality of the wiring between your home and your telephone exchange
- The specification of your modem or router
- The speed of connection between your computer and modem/wireless router (Ethernet and wireless are faster than USB)
- The speed of your computer processor and RAM
- Whether all your broadband microfilters are correctly installed on each line socket.
Your broadband speed will also vary during the day depending on how busy the Internet sites you are visiting are, whether you're sharing your connection with others in your home and whether you have any malware {spyware, virus or Trojans etc} or software slowing down your computer.Typically your speed may reduce significantly during the daily peak period 6pm-10pm.
Internet Cafés (Locutorios)
One or two internet cafes can be found in most main towns. Just look for the Locutorio sign. They usually also offer international telephone call facilities.
