Obtaining a telephone connection

Telefónica have the monopoly on telephone services in Spain.  Most people have a different story to tell about their dealings with Telefónica.  When sorting your telephone affairs in our local area you may be lucky and not have to wait long, or you may find you are chasing daily.  Be patient!

The good thing is they have an English speaking department. This is separate from the Spanish department, so if you order a phone line from one make sure you are consistent if you are chasing dates, otherwise you may end up being billed twice.

To contact them dial 1004 (which is free).  When the Spanish message has finished there is a message in English telling you what to do.

Of course, you are free to research other telephone providers, and we’d love to hear about your experiences, good or bad.

Taking over an existing line
To do this you need to contact Telefónica and get the line transferred into your name.  Make sure there are no outstanding debts on the line or you may find yourself having to pay these.

Ordering a new line
This should be done through Telefónica.  The cost will depend on whether a line needs to brought to your property or whether one already exists near the property.  If you cannot exist without a telephone make sure you order your line in plenty of time – it can take months.

Answerphone
If your telephone hasn’t got an answerphone on it you can activate the answerphone service.  Just lift the receiver, press *10# and replace the receiver.  Your answerphone message will be in Spanish.

To deactivate the service, lift the receiver, press #10# and replace the receiver.

To listen to your messages lift the receiver and wait for a few seconds – you will be told if you have any new messages.

Mobile Phones
Most mobile phones are supplied by Movistar (Telefónica) or other main providers such as Orange. There are shops in most larger towns and a mobile phone is easy to buy.  However, if you don’t have an NIE number you won’t be able to buy a phone on contract, you will need to keep topping it up with credit.

To take out a mobile phone contract you will also need to show your passport or other form of identification, a copy of your padron certificate ( same as the electral role) and have a form signed by your bank to prove you have a bank account and a means of paying.  The mobile phone shop will give you the form which you will need to take to your bank for stamping and signing.

Adding credit to your phone is quick and easy and can be done in many locations including petrol stations, tobacconists, newsagents and at cash points where you have a bank account.  Even through your bank internet account! Just look for a sign saying ‘Recargamos moviles’.

Free Calls
There are several companies advertising free call deals.  We recommend you read the small print before signing up to any of these.

What you should know is that you will need a good broadband connection to be able to use this facility.

Skype is a good way of communicating cheaply or for free.  You’ll need a sound card for your PC, a microphone and speakers or headphones.  It’s very easy to download from their website.

You may want to look at an English company called www.vonage.co.uk as well!  You pay a monthly fee £5.99 and call any Uk number for no cost. And importantly anyone calling you pays only local rates. There is no need for a PC with this but you do need a broadband (1mb+) connection.  Also try www.voipstunt.com
