Obtaining a Post Office Box
The postal system in our local area is nothing like the GPO in the UK.
Don’t expect the post man to arrive at your house each morning with your letters and bills. If you do you’ll be waiting a long time.
To receive post you’ll need a post office box (apartado postal), either at the local post office or near to the street in which you live. Some banks also offer a free PO box service if you have an account with them.
To set up a post office box at the post office you’ll need to complete a form at the post office, giving details of your name, address, NIE or passport number and details of any other persons you authorise to collect your post.
The annual charge for this is currently about 60€.
When you’ve paid and completed the form you’ll be issued with a key. Don’t loose it as you can’t obtain a replacement – it’s advisable to get a copy immediately.
Don’t forget local post offices don’t stay open for long; usually only a couple of hours in the morning.
If you want a post box in one of the groups of boxes near where you live you should go to your local town hall (ayuntamiento) and request one. You also need to pay for this – ask for the current price as it changes quite often.
These boxes aren’t so readily available, so you might find you have to keep going back to check if one is free.
The other option if you don't want to use your local post office is the franchise service Total Postal, which offers a post box rental service and also a postal and courier service. Total Postal offices can be found in most larger towns.
