Newsagents & Tobacconists
Many newsagents (la prensa) stock a good selection of British and German newspapers and magazines, although they can be expensive. They are often printed in Spain so news is up to date (including the Sunday editions).
There are also plenty of ex-pat newspapers printed in English and German that will tell you what’s going on locally, although many are full of advertisements. The main ones in this area are the Costa Blanca News. which is a paid title and Round Town News which is free.
If you want to practise your Spanish then buying the Spanish newspapers is an excellent way to do this. Unless you’re fluent you won’t understand everything, but you’ll find that the more you read, accompanied by a good dictionary, the more you will understand. This is a really satisfying way of learning the language and finding out what’s going on in the country you live in. The two main national newspapers are El Mundo and El País. There are also a number of local newspapers covering the Alicante and Valencia regions.
Newspapers and magazines can also be bought at street kiosks and in large supermarkets.
Newsagents also sell a limited selection of stationery, sweets, toys, greetings cards and books.
If you’re a smoker then the only place you’re likely to be able to buy cigarettes is the tobacconists (tabac) or from cigarette machines in bars and restaurants. You can’t usually buy cigarettes in supermarkets, petrol stations or shops.
