Location - things to consider

First impressions mean a lot and going with your gut feeling about a location is often correct.  Of course, you should also weigh up the pros and cons of the area and whether it ‘ticks all your boxes’.

Town or village, coast or inland?
This will depend on whether you wish to live in the isolated countryside, in the centre of a lively Spanish village, near the sea or mountains.  There’s something for everyone in this region.

Facilities.
Schools, shops, sports centres, leisure facilities, restaurants, supermarkets, doctors and hospitals are all important to different people.  You might want to be within walking distance of the local facilities or you may be happy to travel everywhere by car.  Check out our town information pages to tell you more.

Peace and tranquillity.
You may prefer the total darkness and silence of the countryside (campo) or the security of knowing people are living next door to you in the town.  Don’t forget at fiesta time the Spanish will party all night and they do love letting off fireworks at the most unusual times!

Weather.
The weather is very changeable in this region and no two years are the same.  One year you could be eating Christmas dinner on your naya, the next huddling in front of your log fire.  The weather in the higher mountainous areas is cooler, although can still get unbearably hot during July and August.  It’s always a few degrees warmer nearer the coast.

Community.
Some people prefer the ‘safety’ of living in an ex-pat community where their native language is spoken and they can communicate with people.  Others like to try and integrate into the ‘real Spain’ by living amongst the Spanish.  It’s a shame to live here and not try to speak the language (after all we usually expect foreigners living in our home country to speak our language), and a little effort goes a long way.  The locals really do appreciate it if you try and speak Spanish, and don’t worry, they’ll speak Castellano to you, not Valenciano.
