Relleu is a municipality in the comarca of Marina Baixa, Alicante.
Relleu is a village that belongs to the region of Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante. Its geographical location offers advantages that few other towns can have, for the mountain (eg Aitana) is only 30 minutes drive and the beaches, such as Benidorm We can say that they are the same distance. This fact and also that the journey to Terra Mitica, the Safari Aitana and Canelobre Caves are really short, makes the geographic position of Relleu one of the most interesting for all types of visitors.
The town owes it name to its uneven topography as the clayey soil of its extensive district, half way between the Marina Baixa and L´Alicantí, is covered with mounts and hills. The 1609 decree expelling the Moors dramatically affected the town´s population, who fled to the mountains and then, together with the Moors of Finestrat and Sella, rose up against Alicante. After they were routed there remained only 15 old Christian families in the village. Originally formed around the Moorish castle, the town became one of the most populous of the area at the beginning of the 20th century, having 3,342 inhabitants. This was due to the Amadorio River, which irrigated the ´huerta´. Today, through emigration and the scarcity of agricultural land, the population of the town has again decreased. The town has a very interesting and well-preserved urban structure
