Nestled in the Jalón Valley, the tiny village of Llíber is home to both Spanish and foreigners who’ve chosen to make their home here.  One of the smallest villages in the region, it has a thriving community with local shops, bars and two schools: the Spanish infant and primary school and the modern international Lady Elizabeth school.

The main village has the road from Gata de Gorgos and Benissa to Jalón running through it.  The road is extremely narrow when it passes through the village and so has traffic lights to control the traffic.  These traffic lights are possibly the slowest traffic lights in Spain, as they take several minutes to change to allow the traffic to pass from one end of the village to the other.

Don’t panic if you sit there for at least five minutes waiting for them to change, but be warned, they only allow about four cars through.  Jump the lights and you might find yourself in a typical Spanish small town snarl-up as there’s only a small area to pass in the centre of the village.  This is when the local police are likely to appear from nowhere and sort the problem out.

Whilst the main town is minutes away from Jalón there are many houses and villas built on the outskirts which stretch almost to Gata de Gorgos.

The town’s main industries are grapes, oranges and almonds.

Llíber’s fiestas take place in August when everyone joins in the celebrations and parties until the small hours.

Llíber is also a great place to walk and see more of the region.  If you head up the Gata road but keep left along the paths you’ll discover a wonderful short walk that takes you back to Llíber, known as the Montaneta walk.
