The town of Alfaz del Pi (Alfàs del Pi in Valenciano) lies between Benidorm and Altea.  It is 2km inland, but with tourist development it extends to the coast as far as the town of Albir.  From here you can see the famous Peñon d’Ifach, (rock of Calpe) in the distance.

A popular tourist destination in the summer, Alfaz is an alternative if you’re not into the lively nightlife and faster pace of Benidorm.

Almost half of the permanent residents are foreigners, which shows the attraction of the town.  The 2006 census showed a total population of almost 19,000 inhabitants.

Alfaz was once inhabited by the Moors, who gave it its name.  Alfaz means ‘sown land’ and Pi is the Valenciano word for pine tree.  The pine tree features on the town’s coat of arms, and it is believed that during the 17th century a single pine tree was planted by the residents of the town, to call for independence from the Polop barony.

The town was built as a fortified settlement against the Barbary pirates (the Muslim pirates from North Africa), who operated in the area between the 16th and 19th centuries.  The pirates are historically known for capturing European slaves and selling them in North Africa.

As with every Spanish town, Alfaz has it’s quota of fiestas, and if you’re looking for a taste of true Spanish life fiesta-time is the time to visit.  Alfaz holds its fiestas in March, August and November, when the streets and beaches come alive with parades, singing, dancing and the general festivities the Spanish are well known for.

The town is also famous for its annual international film festival that takes place every July in the cultural centre.  The promenade is known as ‘el paseo de las estrellas’ (the walk of the stars), as it recognises the famous film stars that have received awards there.

There’s plenty to do in the town, from visiting one of the many bars and restaurants to experiencing a medieval night out at the Desafio Medieval on the outskirts of the town.

The hub of the town evolves around the main square and church, the church of Cristo del Buen Acierto.
