Benitachell, with its 3,500 inhabitants, is a small, quaint village that lies between Teulada and Jávea. Life is centred around the main village and the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation. Many describe this sprawl of modern houses built on the hillside as an eye-sore, and the area is known for being very windy, which can be a blessing in the heat of the summer.
There is a beautiful beach, called Playa del Moraig, which is backed by sheer cliffs dropping down to the sea. This beach has crystal clear waters, making it perfect for snorkelling. One end of it is also a nudist beach.
There are some lovely unknown walks around this area, details of which can be found on the town hall website; www.benitatxell.com Go to the ‘rutas naturales’ page, where the directions can be found in Spanish.
This area was conquered by the Catalan-Aragons in 1244 and then abandoned. It wasn’t repopulated until the 16th century when settlers returned. It was also ruled by the Marquesa de Denia. There have been prehistoric finds in the area dating back 18,000 years.
The main fiesta of Benitachell is held in May.
