Built in the Sierra de Segária mountain range, Benidoleig is another small centuries old Spanish town that maintains its true Spanish culture.
At 130m above sea level and only 6 km from Ondara, Benidoleig is probably best known for its famous caves, the Cueva de las Calaveras. These date back to Stone Age times and are known to have been inhabited 100,000 years ago by Palaeolithic man. Remnants of bones and tools have been found and are on display in the caves.
It is believed that the Arabic king Ali-Moho hid in the caves with his 150 wives and his family treasure to hide from El Cid, the military leader that once conquered and ruled Valencia. People say that the king and his wives all perished in the caves and their remains can still be found.
On a more modern note the ‘Leisure Oasis’ El Cid takes its name from this story and is a well known bed and breakfast and entertainment facility situated on the outskirts of Benidoleig. The centre hosts many social events from bowling to ballroom dancing to quiz nights and in summer holds barbecues by its pool.
If Spanish charm is more your thing take a walk around the old parts and experience the true feel of life in this pretty little village, with its small school, shops, post office that only opens for an hour a day and usual mix of bars and restaurants a trip to Benidoleig is worth it. The weekly market is held on a Thursday morning.
