The charming town of Altea lies only 10km from Benidorm yet is a totally different world. A mix of both traditional and modern Spain, Altea has something to suit all tastes.
Altea is on the coast, approximately half way between Benidorm and Calpe.
Famous for its church with the roof of blue and white glazed tiles that can be seen for miles around, Altea is a town of contrasts. This church, la iglesia del virgin del Consuelo, often features on postcards as a historic landmark of the area.
The old town sprawls down a hill and consists of a mix of narrow cobbled streets, craft shops and plenty of bars and restaurants to stop and relax in.
Cross the N332, that runs through the town, and you’ll find a beautiful clean and modern promenade flanked with palm trees and backed by places to eat and drink. This area has a completely different feel from the old town and is a lovely place to while away a few hours, watching the waves lap the shore or the boats in the harbour in the old fisherman’s quarter.
There is 5km of beach to be found in Altea, but don’t expect white powdery sand as the beaches are all shingle or pebbles. The three main beaches are Cap Negret, La Roda and Cap Blanc. For people with young children there is a lovely well looked after play area just off the promenade about 5 minutes from the harbour.
A word of advice is to avoid travelling through Altea during the summer months, as you’re likely to be stuck in traffic for a very long time. Many people make this mistake when travelling from the North Costa Blanca to Benidorm, thinking the journey will be a quick one. It’s much faster to take the motorway as traffic just seems to get stuck in Altea.
Altea is backed by the Sierra Bernia and in the hills behind the town there are quite a few urbanisations and developed areas offering some properties with magnificent views of both the mountains and the sea.
If you’re in search of a bargain, the famous Altea market is the place to visit on a Tuesday. Bursting with local crafts, clothes, furniture, gifts and general market fayre, the market is one of the largest in the region.
