Local & National Spanish Fiestas

No stay in Spain is complete without a day and night spent at a fiesta. Every town in the local area has its own fiesta, in addition to the national ones. Some last a few days and others a couple of weeks.
Fiestas are one of the things Spain does best. People know how to enjoy themselves and as well as the religious links (many fiestas involve parades behind statues of saints) it’s an excuse for one big street party! Bands play, giant paellas are cooked, entertainment for children is laid on (free of course!) and people dress up in eye-catching costumes or their Sunday best.
Bull running is also a big attraction of many fiestas, sometimes through the streets and sometimes in an enclosed area (usually the town square).
Foreigners are welcome to join in and if you have Spanish friends and you’re asked to join them don’t miss the opportunity to take part in one of Spain’s most popular forms of entertainment.
If a single fiesta date falls on a Tuesday or Thursday then the Monday or Friday will also be taken as a holiday known as ‘el puente’ – ‘the bridge’
