Local Language
The majority of local Spanish people speak Castilian (castellano), the main form of Spanish and also Valencian (valenciano/valencià). Locals in the areas our guides cover tend to speak to each other in valenciano and signs in shops and on roads are also in this local language. Many schools also use valenciano as their main teaching language.
Valenciano is an autonomous language that is very similar to Catalan, which is another local language spoken north of this region. The Castilian name for the language is Valenciano and the Valencian name is Valencià.
A survey conducted by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian council) found that 94% of local people can speak the language.
Valenciano is similar to Spanish but sounds much harder and is like a mixture of Spanish, French and Italian.
Local people will usually speak in castellano if you ask them to, or if you speak to them in this language.
If you can master a few words of Valenciano the locals will be very impressed. Here are some phrases to help you:
Good morning - Bon día
Good afternoon - Bona vesprada
Good night - Bona nit
Goodbye - Adéu
See you later - Fins demà
How are you? - Com està vosté?
Very well thanks, and you? - Molt bé gràcies. I vosté?
Please - Per favour
Thank you - Gràcies
It doesn’t matter - No passa res
You’re welcome - De res
