There are a number of international schools in Spain that are run privately.  These schools are fee paying, although the fees are considerably less than a private school in the UK.  Many follow the British curriculum and the teaching is in English with some Spanish classes.  Students can take both GCSE and A-level exams at these schools. 

There are also other foreign language speaking schools in Spain, for example French, German and Swedish.

These mustn’t be confused with Spanish private schools, which follow the Spanish curriculum and where students are taught in Spanish.

Many international schools have a mix of British, Spanish and students of other nationalities. 

International schools that are members of the NABSS (National Association of British Schools in Spain) are approved by British school inspectors.  

Most international schools wear uniform, which is a cost to be considered.  You don’t have to pay for books at an international school in Spain. 

When considering an international school for your child you should consider the following:

• Is the school recognised by the Spanish authorities?
• Does the school have a good academic record?
• Will my child be taught by a native English speaker?
• How much Spanish will your child learn?
• What are the class sizes?
• What facilities does the school have (sports, science, arts)?
• Are there extra-curricular activities?
• What are the fees and do they increase annually?
• What are the withdrawal conditions?
• Will I have to pay for extras (pens and pencils, school trips, sports equipment, lunches)?
