Insurance

There are many insurance companies in Spain and lots speak English.  You can either use an insurance agent (remember they will charge commission) or deal directly with an insurance company.

The main types of insurance are:

•    vehicle (a legal requirement)
•    health (fairly essential if you aren’t paying social security and are not entitled to Spanish healthcare or if you don’t have a large amount of spare cash)
•    house and contents (not essential but advisable)
•    life (depends on your circumstances)
•    travel (essential for each journey abroad you make – note a travel insurance policy you’ve previously used for holidays won’t cover you if you live in Spain)?
Shop around when looking for any type of insurance as prices differ greatly.

Make sure you always receive your insurance policy and check the details.  Companies do not always send reminders when a policy is due to expire and most will automatically take the money from your bank account without informing you if prices have increased.

Keep on top of your insurance policies and know when they expire so you can shop around for cheaper deals each year.

Always ensure that you fully understand the contract and any excesses that may have to be paid in the event of a claim.  If the policy is in Spanish get it translated.

Check what the cancellation procedure is and if there is any penalty.  If you find a cheaper policy you don’t want to be paying the money you’ve saved in equivalent charges.
