Large white goods tend to be slightly cheaper than in the UK and most big brands are available. They can be purchased in specialist stores such as Brico or Aitana. Delivery is usually free, but make sure you give clear directions to where you live, particularly if you live in an area with no road signs. Spanish delivery drivers and sat nav systems don’t seem to mix!

Many Spanish white goods are a different size from those sold in the UK, so if you’re thinking of bringing your dishwasher, fridge or tumble drier to Spain check they will fit in your kitchen. You may find it cheaper to buy new ones than pay the import costs.

Remember if you bring your own household goods you will need plenty of adapter plugs which can be easily purchased here. You should also bring spare light bulbs for UK lamps, as only the standard size bulbs are available here.

One essential item we recommend, particularly if you have a family is a tumble drier. While washing dries in half an hour in the summer in winter it’s a different matter. The region can be very damp and drying washing can be impossible, particularly if you are unfortunate enough to live in a house without heating.

If you’re a DIYer and are looking for all the usual DIY tools and accessories try Brico or Aitana. They sell all the usual DIY products such as gardening tools, electrical accessories, tools, light bulbs, paint, nuts and bolts and flat pack furniture. Many of these products can also be found in the hypermarkets. There is often also a DIY store in villages, known as the ferretería, where every DIY item you could possibly want can be found (although you might have to ask if it’s not on display). They usually even sell British to Spanish plug adapters!

Remember! Spanish electricity runs at a lower voltage than in the UK and in older Spanish houses some UK products will cause the system to trip. Electric kettles are well known for this. If you live in an older house don’t expect to watch the TV whilst sitting by your electric fire and boil the kettle for a cup of tea all at the same time!
