Not all university courses in Spain are in Spanish, as some universities have British and American links.
The number of universities in Spain has grown over the past few years and is provided by both public and private institutions.
If you attend university in Spain, depending on which course you choose you will attend one of the following departments: departamentos, facultades universitarias, escuelas tecnicas superiores, escuelas universitarias, institutos universitarios, and other centres, notably the colegios universitarios.
Applying for a University Place in Spain
Demand for university places is high in Spain and competition is fierce. The majority of courses are in Spanish, so a high level of fluency will be required. The exception to this is at the British or American run universities, which are based in the larger cities.
To gain a place students must have passed the Prueba general de bachillerato (PGB). Acceptance is then based on the student’s mark both in this exam and over the two years of studying the baccalaureate.
Foreign students that were born in an EU country have the right to apply to Spanish universities on the same terms as Spanish students. Qualifications that are accepted in a student’s own country for university entrance are usually accepted in Spain.
