Getting your NIE number

You’ll need an NIE number (numero de identificación de extranjero) to undertake most major financial transactions in Spain.

Once you have this number you will be able to do things such as:

•    Buy a house
•    Buy a car
•    Apply for a credit card
•    Sign up to a mobile phone contract
•    Sort your taxes
•    Apply for a permanent job

The procedure for obtaining your NIE is:

•    Complete the NIE application form

This can be printed from the Internet.  Or, downloaded from the link above. Just type in NIE form and several websites offering free copies of the blank form will come up.  It’s usually in PDF format, which means you type into it and can’t save it, or you print it off and write on it.  So we recommend you keep a copy.

You will need one application form for each member of your family.

The form looks like this:

How to complete the NIE application form

1er Apellido        Your surname

2o Apellido          2nd part of your surname if double-barrelled

*NB ensure all names are exactly as on your passport

                Nationality

Domicilio a efectos                      Address in Spain where you want

•    Get photocopies of the application form.

This is important as when you have queued for your number for 3 or 4 hours (no exaggeration!) and the official asks you for copies as well as the original it is heart breaking to have to go and find the photo copy shop.  Take several copies with you.

•    Get photocopies of your passport as the above applies.

•    Obtain 2 passport photos.

•    Take the above documents to your nearest National Police station.  For this area it is Denia.  The police stations in the local towns and villages don’t process NIE numbers.

•    The police station in Denia can be found near the port.  Follow the signs to the port and the station can be found on your left as you drive away from the main town, with the sea on your left.  You can usually distinguish it from the large queue of people standing outside.

It is advisable to park in one of the municipal car parks as there is no parking at the police station and limited street parking, particularly in the summer months.

You may also obtain your NIE in Altea at the 'Office for foreigners' Calle Labrador 4, Altea (near Palau), or for a same day service Benidorm Tel 966 831 930 opening hours 09.00 - 14.00

•    Before you join the queue you must get a numbered ticket from inside (the queue is outside as they only let 2 or 3 people in at a time).

•    Join the queue and be prepared to wait.  It is advisable to arrive first thing in the morning, opens at 9am.  Note the office doesn’t open in the afternoons.  A handy tip is to take a friend to chat to and snacks to eat and drink!

•    Once your number reaches the front of the queue you will be invited inside by the guard.  The numbers are usually called out in Spanish, so you may need your dictionary. Although in Denia there is an electronic sign to keep an eye upon.

•    Go to the office on the right signed ‘Extranjeros’ and present your documents.  If everything is in order this process will only take about 5 minutes.

•    Unless you are really lucky you won’t get your number immediately.  You are usually given a number to ring in about 6 weeks time.

•    When you call this number they will tell you if your NIE is ready.  When returning to the police station you don’t need to queue again.  Go inside and there’s a desk on the left where the paperwork is issued.  A trick is to sneak in through the back door looking confident, which means you haven’t got to deal with the guard at the front door.

If your sending anyone else to pick up the forms you need to give them written authority to do so.

Having survived the above procedure and got your NIE number, make sure you keep copies of it.  Finally, reward yourself with a large glass of wine!
