Generators & Solar Energy
In the more rural areas you’ll often hear the faint hum of generators producing electricity. Spain is still a developing country and electricity doesn’t automatically reach every small village and hamlet. This is when generators are needed.
Generators run on petrol or diesel and can only produce a limited power supply.
Some rural homes also run on solar energy, but this is usually combined with an electrical and/or gas supply as it can’t be relied on year-round. Despite Spain being such a sunny country solar power has limited use, probably because of the cost. For example, to install an average hot water system to be used by a family of four it would cost in the region of 4000 euros. Of course, there are long term cost savings, but this is still an expensive outlay.
