The Spanish MOT is known as the ITV (inspección técnica de vehículos). All vehicles over 4 years old have to have a valid ITV (i.e. your vehicle has to have a certificate proving it is roadworthy).
You must take your vehicle to a specialist ITV centre for its test, ordinary garages don’t do them. To find your nearest centre look in the yellow pages under Inspección técnica de vehículos or visit www.dgt.es
Here are two useful ITV inspection centre telephone numbers:
Dénia - 966 435 443
Benidorm - 966 831 102
You must ring for an appointment, you can’t just turn up. The inspection takes about 20 minutes, so you wait. If the vehicle fails you will be given written confirmation of why and you will need to get the repair done at a garage and book a re-inspection within 15 days.
When a vehicle passes the inspection you are given a certificate to display in the corner of your windscreen. These are a different colour every year. You will also have your ITV card (tarjeta de inspección técnica de vehículos) dated and stamped.

If your vehicle has been involved in a serious accident it will also need a new ITV.
