Better way of life?
Many expatriates certainly think the Spanish way of life is better, which can be seen by the thousands that still emigrate here every year.
The lifestyle offers a much more relaxed way of living and the Spanish certainly know how to enjoy life.
But it’s not all about sun, sea and sangria (although they do help!). Work hard and play hard is the Spanish philosophy. If you work in Spain you’ll work very hard and possibly for longer hours than you did before. But the outdoor lifestyle, cheaper food and wine, cheaper housing and friendliness of the people make it all worth it.
Eating out in Spain is often cheaper if you go to the local restaurants; you can often get a three course meal with wine for 10euros. This can be a cheaper option than eating at home and there’s nothing more relaxing than a long leisurely meal with friends whilst watching the world go by.
Another benefit for foreigners is the price of property. Although not as cheap as it used to be, property prices are still lower than in the UK and there are bargains still to be found. The amount of land and property you can get for your money in Spain is much more than in the UK. This also applies to renting, and remember, it’s always worth negotiating on price.
Children certainly seem to have a better way of life in Spain. There’s always something to do, from a trip to the beach to a visit to one of the many attractions along the Costa Blanca. Children are welcome everywhere and it’s almost expected that you take your children out to dine with you rather than leave them with a babysitter. Restaurant staff will make a fuss of them and there’s always the customary lolly pop at the end of the meal!
If you’re an outgoing person you’ll certainly make new friends in Spain – of all nationalities. People have time to stop and talk and will usually do their best to help you. It’s easy to strike up a conversation in a bar or restaurant and many lifelong friendships are made this way. If you talk to Spanish people they’ll be happy to help you practise your language skills. And talking to fellow expatriates is easy as you’ve all got something in common – the love of living in Spain!
